Sony Ericcson in hot water with Advertising Standards Authority

Sony Ericcson has received a slap on the wrist from the Advertising Standards Authority over ‘misleading’ claims surrounding the company’s Satio smartphone. The BBC’s Newsbeat reports that the claims centre on the company falsely representing the handset’s ability to access Facebook.

In a TV commercial for the Satio, the handset was shown to be running a Facebook application but a user of the phone later complained to the ASA after it was found the feature wasn’t included with the phone and couldn’t be installed due to software issues with earlier models.

The ASA said: “Because the ad implied the application was either pre-loaded on the phone or would be available to download, and because this was not the case at the time the ad was broadcast, we concluded the ad was misleading.”

Sony Ericsson claim that the problem has been rectified and the application can now be downloaded to the phone.

The Satio has been something of a thorn-in-the-side for Sony Ericcson since it was launched in October 2009. Both Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U were forced to withdraw the phone from sale temporarily following a high number of customer returns, following a buggy operating system.

Sony Ericcson has struggled in the mobile market for some time, with 2009 seeing a 40% drop in handset uptake compared to the previous year.

Google and Facebook Faceoff!

Posted by James | Filed under social media

Google’s release of OpenSocial, heralded as a major forward assault on the social networking giant Facebook, may be creating fear inside Facebook as the new rival steps up to the plate.

OpenSocial is not a new release for Google’s own social networking site, Orkut, but a way for the giant to build a social aspect into its already existing and widely used applications. All iGoogle widgets, Google Talk, Google Calendar, Reader, Mail, everything you use on your iGoogle page will be stealthily infiltrated by OpenSocial.

But why doesn’t google just stick it out with its own Orkut. It might be because although the site is used regularly worldwide, its US stats are not even close to what it would like. This could have been the impetus for releasing OpenSocial and how it is devised so that it hits Facebook where it hurts.

Facebook is essentially a closed platform and it is clear that Google’s strategy is to make this apparent to developers wanting an easier and more open way into social networking and allowing third party developers to access data from any social site. Some commentators are not impressed by Google’s latest venture with Jack Schofield at Guardian Unlimited Technology stating “I can’t see what’s open about it.”

The major battle Google faces is the number of users on Facebook but it may have already found its way around this through the back door – or the apps that Google users already use.

There is plenty more to come here, so time will tell on this one.
