Dr Pepper’s new ‘flash mob’ ad

Flash mob advertising once used to be fresh, innovative and fun. Now they’re just boring.

But that didn’t stop Dr Pepper from creating a flash mob advert for their new campaign, says Bitterwallet. – but unlike previous flash mob ads, Dr Pepper didn’t even stick to the rules!

A true flash mob is where dozens or even hundreds of strangers descend on a given location to carry out a pre-planned act, such as to sing a song or perform a dance routine. But Dr Pepper instead hired some singers and dancers and plonked them onto the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange to sing the Dr Pepper theme tune – badly – as traders looked on in bemusement.

Watch the advert and let us know what you think of it in the comments. After all, what’s the worst that could happen?

M&S to sell two million products for 1p each

Posted by James | Filed under news

As Marks and Spencer celebrate their 125th birthday this month, the company is keen to remind shoppers of its humble beginnings and company history. To celebrate this history, and to give something back to consumers, M&S will put more than two million products on sale for just a penny each.

It’s hard to believe, but retailers M&S began as a humble market stall in Leeds Kirkgate Market. The market stall was set up by a Russian refugee known as Michael Marks before opening its first shop in Cheetham Hill Road Manchester, less than ten years later.

The penny products will be available from the 20th of May for three days with proceeds being donated to the M&S 125 Charity Challenge.

This is not just any modelling contract…

Posted by James | Filed under branding, news

It’s an M&S modelling contract and that means it’s a contract worth keeping. Even if a slight pay cut is involved.

This is the news that Myleene Klass has extended her contract with retailers M&S. According to the Daily Mail, the former Hear’Say singer managed to keep her job by agreeing to a 25% pay cut.

While such a significant pay cut may not be ideal for Klass, it is a step up from other models such as Elizabeth Jagger and Lily Cole who will not be extending contracts with M&S. Of course, Klass does have other modelling contracts with companies such as Pantene Shampoo which should top up the shortfall.

The news of Klass’ extended contract comes as M&S make final preparations for their 125th anniversary celebrations.

The British retail group made its first appearance back in 1884 as a market stall in Leeds. Since then M&S have expanded to become a major supermarket chain, clothing retailer and more recently insurance specialists – offering products such as home, wedding and pet insurance.

The M&S 125th Anniversary campaign will focus on the company’s commitment to innovation and style and will be displayed throughout the month of May.

Porn stars beg for hand outs

Posted by James | Filed under news

It seems as though the worldwide recession is hitting pretty much every industry these days, with the banks and car companies appealing for financial assistance. Now it turns out even the porn industry is also pleading that it is suffering from the recession.

The porn baron and Hustler magazine founder Larry Flynt has just launched a request to the US Congress “to rejuvenate the sexual appetite of America” with a $5 billion porn bailout.

Flynt commented: “With all this economic misery and people losing all that money, sex is the farthest thing from their mind,” he continued, by stating that people were “too depressed to be sexually active… Americans can do without cars and such, but they cannot do without sex.” He said the only way Congress could “rejuvenate” America’s sexual appetite was “by supporting the adult industry and doing it quickly”. There has so far been no response from Congress to the request.

Meanwhile other porn producers like Digital Playground are looking to the iPhone to help them out by ensuring cross platform compatibility and optimising their content for Wi-Fi or 3G delivery. Apple supremo Steve Jobs however has other ideas and has singled out and is refusing to allow porn apps to be made available for the handset, despite their announcement that they would open up the iPhone to third-party applications.

The idea that Google’s Android phone might offer a suitable alternative to the iPhone has been dismissed by Farley Cahen, Digital Playground’s vice president of new media, stating: “The general features of the iPhone far outweigh the (Android) features”. The mind of this writer boggles as to what he is referring to and why one would be better than another.

Maybe Flynt and co are looking for the $5 billion to help develop the holy grail for the porn industry – a mobile platform specifically dedicated to adult content delivery. They might even call it the iPorn.
